‘BOOMTOWN’ Tuggerah redevelopment: New Westfield proposal, homes, shops and transport interchange

In this edition of the “Central Coast Express Advocate” – Daily Tele on the Central Coast – splashed across the front page ‘Boom Town’ and reading on … ‘Tuggerah to be supercharged by $2.8B dollar blueprint’

ISN’T it amazing, what a coincidence this hits the press just as the State Election starts?  What timing, details include:
-$2.8B development of Westfield
-$700M upgrade of Tuggerah railway station and environs
-near 5,000 new homes
-2,700 ongoing jobs
-more than 10,000 construction jobs over 35 years
-18Ha of parks, conservation and rooftop parks … is this code for a roof top car park?

And so on … is it B.S., or is there some slight truth in it?
-Anthony Roberts is in there with Scentre Group the company now behind Westfield, Aboriginal Land Council, development lobby group …  nice looking lot …

Tuggerah redevelopment: New Westfield proposal, homes, shops and transport interchange

The numbers are eye-popping — a $2.8 billion proposal, near 5000 new homes or units built, 10,000 jobs secured, over 70 hectares of land harnessed.

Scentre Group, the company behind Westfield, has unveiled a staggering concept plan to transform Tuggerah as we know it.

It is the biggest proposal of its kind in the history of the Central Coast.

Westfield Tuggerah would be redeveloped by the Scentre Group.

A plan, that if approved, would include the redevelopment of Westfield Tuggerah, the land surrounding it, and the adjoining land that lies between the shopping centre and the M1 motorway.

There’s also a $700 million package that includes a massive upgrade and expansion of Tuggerah station into a transport interchange.

The announcement was made today, and featured NSW Planning Minister Anthony Roberts, as well as representatives from Westfield, the Hunter Central Coast Development Corporation, Darkinjung local aboriginal land council and the Scentre Group, signing a Heads of Agreement document.

“The proposal is for a 35 year redevelopment of this Westfield Tuggerah and adjoining land to transform Tuggerah Town Centre into a stunning, ultra-modern lifestyle hub,” Mr Roberts said.

“If this development goes ahead, it is estimated that the construction alone would generate more than 10,000 new jobs and lead to almost 2700 ongoing jobs once completed, putting Tuggerah on the map as an employment hotspot.

“This game-changing plan is yet further evidence of the enormous surge of investor confidence in the Central Coast.”

Mr Roberts said the Tuggerah Station interchange would “connect and co-ordinate train and bus services to an 8.5km active transport network of pedestrian paths and cycleways.”

He said there were many locals who had suggested the northern suburbs of the coast had been forgotten.

“Let me tell you I never forgot the north,” he said.

“Opportunities like this proposal have the potential to realise the profound life-changing prospects for people of this community today and for generations to come.”

The $2.4 billion announcement for a new Tuggerah Town Centre, including 5000 homes and a redevelopment of Westfield with NSW Planning Minister Anthony Roberts, Scentre Group director of development Stewart White and Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council Chairperson Matthew West

Scentre Group director of development Stewart White said the Masterplan is the group’s “long term vision to create a truly integrated township here in Tuggerah”.

“I know the area extremely well, and have been involved since the late 90s talking on and off about these lands,” he said.

“This is the biggest and boldest vision we have had for mixed use development.

“The plan is to create an extraordinary place for people to live and work.”

Land to the west of Westfield could include an outdoor adventure park and medium to high rise living.

Scentre Group’s head of development opportunity Craig Marshall said the group had completed other projects of this magnitude internationally and highlighted Westfield Sydney and Westfield Chermside as other major projects in Australia.

“This plan for Tuggerah has been in the works for a long time, and it’s all coming together,” he said.

“It’s very exciting for the Central Coast. We are particularly excited about the seniors living and residential aspects. If you are going to evolve, you need to bring the community along with you.”
