Abe Saffron … Networker, deve-loper, most notorious crime figure

AUSTRALIA … migration nation but with some migrants, if they stayed back home, how much nicer Australia may well have been?

Abraham Gilbert Saffron (6 October 1919 – 15 September 2006) was an Australian hoteliernightclub owner and property developer

Who was one of the major figures in organised crime in Australia in the latter half of the 20th century.[1]

Saffron was born in Annandale, New South Wales in 1919, of Russian Jewish descent. He was educated at Annandale and Leichhardt primary schools and at the highly prestigious Fort Street High School. Although his mother hoped he would become a doctor, Saffron left school at 15 and began his business career in the family’s drapery firm in the late 1930s.’

‘King of the Cross: Sydney crime boss Abe ‘Saffron’s secret friends and properties’

This story was first published on May 31, 2007.

‘Saffron was a NETWORKER extraordinaire. He had contacts in politics, business, the public service, local council, the immigration department and in the judiciary, all the way to the highest court in the land.

By the early ’70s, he had moved out of the day-to-day running of the clubs and brothels, instead taking ownership of the real estate in which they operated.’

‘Luna Park fire: The files that linked a Sydney underworld figure to a tragedy’

Updated March 16, 2021

‘At 10.15 on the night of June 9, 1979, flames engulfed the ghost train at Luna Park. Six children and one adult were killed.

Nearly 30 years later in 2007, award-winning Herald investigative journalist Kate McClymont revealed claims that Australia’s most notorious crime figure Abe Saffron was behind the deadly fire at the popular fun park on the shores of Sydney Harbour.

Over three stories, her investigation spoke exclusively with Saffron’s niece as well as families of the victims for their reaction to the claims.

She also obtained files gathered by a Sydney artist Martin Sharp, who had collected an extensive collection of documents.

Anne Buckingham, a niece of the late Abe Saffron, told McClymont: “I don’t think people were meant to be killed.”

The daughter of Saffron’s late sister and business partner Beryl Buckingham, also confirmed that – despite years of denials by Saffron – her uncle sought control of the fun park after the fire.

Saffron, who was linked to seven other blazes, was the subject of a later National Crime Authority investigation into the fires.’

Juanita Nielsen’s suspected murder brought Arthur King back to Kings Cross after his terrifying ordeal

ABE SAFFRON died in 2006 and no doubt the World is a better place without him … BUT are we seeing more like him now?  Networkers … deve-lopers … ?

Boarding Houses rebadged as Co Living boosting the allocation of ‘Affordable Housing’

NSW INC so far has been very generous with its allocation of 10 percent ‘affordable housing’ (sarcasm intended) so in order to meet this need, and enhance deve-loper and investor wealth …

… Under the cover of Covid … NSW INC, it appears, has been plotting with their deve-loper mates for more end-users for apartments.

With what is known now as ‘affordable housing’ in the form of ‘co-living’ rather than the lable of ‘boarding houses’ they are:

-to be constructed within apartment precincts

-seniors housed in ‘vertical villages’

This is amid a housing shortage and affordability crisis of their creation!

Reported that home ownership for those aged under 35 has halved since 1995!

AUSTRALIA used to have 70 percent home ownership!

WHAT has happened to the Australian Dream? This article seems to infer that co living (the modern day boarding house) is being sought after by Millennials!

That it is desirable … but who in their 30s aspires to a bedroom and sharing common living areas with others at $400 p.w.?

What will be next?  Like that perhaps in Hong Kong, a cage home?

Will you be voting for this at the next NSW and Federal Elections?

Yes, we need a top-level Inquiry into Uncontrolled House Prices

INITIALLY we balked at Jessica Irvine’s suggestion that:

‘ … we used to point the finger at immigrants for causing spiralling property prices, but then we shut the borders for over a year and prices still rose 16 per cent nationally – the fastest rise in at least a quarter of a century? Yeah, me too.’

This she wrote in her article, ‘We need a Top-Level Inquiry into runaway home pricesand Ken Henry’s up for it!’

However, a hurdle not talked about here is that we have ‘a PM for PROPERTY’ … as a former staffer he wrote the policy for the developer lobby group: The Property Council of Australia … and it appears government policies favour deve-lopers somewhat! Our borders were allegedly closed, but not for 15,000 wealthy foreigners given Australian Visas!

AND who would Coalition MP Jason Falinski be representing with an inquiry into housing supply?  Cough … cough …

JF:  “Everyone focuses on negative gearing and capital gains tax, but the 800-pound gorilla in the room is supply.”

On the demand side, a common belief in the power of government to step in and change the size and shape of demand for housing, by changing TAX RULES (i.e. Tax Benefits for investors) and (sometimes) curbing immigration.

-with supply inelastic: the time it takes to build new stock

-demand everyone needs a place to live

Q. Why has Home Ownership for those aged under 35 halved since 1995?

A.  John Howard was Prime Minister between 11 March 1996 and 3 December 2007 during which terms permanent migration of 70,000 p.a. was replaced with temporary migration of Visa holders lured by investment in education and real estate to gain ‘flexible citizenship’ particularly Middle Class Chinese; as our real estate became awash with ‘Black Money’, and property prices escalated with a boom in 2004!

Temporary migration numbered hundreds of thousands of people. Prior to the Pandemic there were 2.3 MILLION Visa holders in Australia of which 1.6 MILLION were Visa workers! Many seeking and gaining ‘Permanent Residency’!

At the same time Australians including Millennials (Gen Y) have endured the lowest wages growth!

In a paper titled Housing: Taming the Elephant in the Economy, among the list of demands from those on the Demand side:

*an expansion of the Reserve Bank’s mandate to include “maintaining a more price stable and well-functioning housing market.

AND Hal Pawson a demand-side academic suggested a high-level Treasury review of the ilk of the Ken Henry Tax Review!  Independent of the Government!

Jessica Irvine:  ‘So, I texted Henry to see if he’s up for it. He replied:

“Jess. Sure. I’d chair such a review. The question is whether we have a government with the courage to commission it. Ken.”

Jessica concluded: ‘Call it an elephant, or call it a gorilla, what’s crystal-clear is that Australia’s growing housing affordability crisis is wreaking havoc on the quality of life of all Australians and it needs to be stopped.’

Under the Cover of Covid 15,000 Wealthy Foreigners given Australian Visas!

DURING the Pandemic 15,000 wealthy foreigners have been given Australian Visas!

WE did tell you so!

Martin North, principal of property research firm Digital Finance Analytics, also notes ‘there’s been a swing away from foreigners looking to invest to people wanting to move here.’  And that they are more interested in buying land and larger properties!

Overseas Buyers are tipped to Return!

MEANWHILE tens of thousands of Australians remain stranded overseas!

This latest report:

IS this not the ultimate betrayal by the Morrison Government through its business innovation and investment visa programme?

Under these visas:

Business Innovation Stream applicants can buy or start a business, and have $1.25M in either business or personal assets

Investor stream, applicants have to be recommended by a state or territory agency and invest $2.5M on authorised investments

Significant investor stream, applicants must invest $5M, with a minumum $1M in venture capital or private equity

In September 2016 in its final report the Productivity Commission called for these visas to be scrapped because they are channels for money laundering!

WHY hasn’t there been a response from the Morrison Government to a public inquiry into “Migrant intake into Australia”?

With the ‘Significant Investor and Premium Investor Visas’

no English language requirements

no upper age limits

-a risk they might be an avenue for ‘dirty money’

Most business and investment immigrants are often older, buy retail and hospitality businesses, so how can this add to Australia’s innovative and entrepreneurial capacity?

View this AFR report about migration agents enabling Chinese investors to gain Significant Investment Visas!

HOW can this be of any benefit to the Australian people and our Nation with more competition to buy our businesses from overseas with ‘black money’?

AND even more competition for a limited supply of housing, and inadequate infrastructure as these VISAS allow ‘Permanent Residency,’ and the benefits of parking ‘their family’ in Australia as they can continue to run their business in another country?

These families have access to our MEDICARE, and FREE EDUCATION as their business is predominantly overseas!

‘Mystery still surrounds disappearance of Sydney heiress Juanita Nielsen, 44 years on’

Frank William Theeman known as Frank Theeman (1913-1989), businessman and land developer, was born on 28 May 1913 in Vienna, son of Jewish parents Arthur Thiemann (d. 1936), bank officer, and his wife Frieda, née Donreich, and was named Franz Wilhelm.

Frank Theeman immigrated to Australia from Vienna in the late 1930s, started with almost nothing, and rose to become a highly successful businessman.(Fairfax Media)

‘Theeman had developed close political connections with the Liberal Party of Australia and saw opportunities in the Liberal ascension to power in New South Wales in 1965, when planning restrictions were eased to open residential areas to commercial development’

‘But by the 1970s, the Cross was swept up in big changes taking over Sydney. One developer in particular — Frank Theeman — saw the terraces on Victoria Street as a potential goldmine.

Planning reforms in the 1960s by NSW Liberal premier Robert Askin gave developers enormous power and stripped the rights of tenants.

Building height limits were removed and developers were incentivised to buy large tracts of land — the bigger the block, the higher they were allowed to build.

Sky-high apartment towers and modernist concrete office buildings began popping up all over the city.

“There’s too much money around,” Victoria Street resident, Juanita Nielsen, said at the time.

“But these pressures, which exist all over Sydney and probably all over the world today, are coming to a head in Kings Cross.”

20 Year Rezoning Strategy for Frenchs Forest

Frenchs ForestAllambie Heights … forever changed by NSW INC Rezoning …

This project has been ongoing for some time now, and evidently revised further during COVID. Rezoning Frenchs Forest and releasing a draft place strategy.

In the process sadly many lost their homes, and/or amenity and their community rights through the rezoning.

The government has released a draft place strategy that calls for a new town centre created around the relocated school, 1,000 new homes and 1.5 hectares of new public open space.

15 percent ‘affordable housing’ an improvement of 5 percent!

New homes in apartment blocks up to 12 storeys, townhouses and terraces.

Another 1000 homes for surrounding ‘transition areas’ …

Meanwhile through onshore proxies and Juwai, overseas buyers too can gain benefits and buy Australian real estate if they are an:

‘Australian permanent resident’, a ‘foreign citizen living in Australia or outside Australia’!

It would seem this is why where we have lived has forever changed!

Much higher density and smaller ‘homes’for heap$ more!

And back in October 2018 Scomo’s guvmnt exempted the real estate gatekeepers from the Anti-money Laundering Laws … so this folks – ‘hot money’ – is what we are up against … side deals too … and this perhaps explains why house prices continue to escalate!
