A WORLD-CLASS medical and wellness centre focusing on preventive health will tap into the growing medical tourism industry in the Asia-Pacific region.

Renowned Australian neurosurgeon Charlie Teo is leading the project, which will form part of the Northern Gateway City.

The proposed facility will have research and development capacities and serve as a training hub for the next generation of medical professionals.

Professor Teo said he chose the Badgerys Creek site because “Sydney was a magnificent city but unfortunately it’s becoming too crowded”.

“If you want all the advantages of Australia and Sydney but you don’t want the disadvantage of being crowded, surely the next horizon should be out west where it’s not crowded and there’s a huge opportunity to build from the ground up,” he said.

“There is no other centre in the world that will offer the science that we are offering as well as the total holistic philosophy that we’re offering when it comes to prevention of illness and wellness.”

Prof Teo said Australia had a strong reputation in health in southeast Asia.

“People trust us as Australians when it comes to health. I’m hoping (the centre) will attract medical tourism from all around the globe because of its uniqueness but certainly specifically from China and southeast Asia,” he said.
