Scott Morrison has distanced himself from a major Chinese community fundraising event this weekend, organised by prominent Sydney Liberal Party members, which was charging a higher rate to sit at the Prime Minister’s table.

Social media messages and details of the event were leaked to The Australian revealing tensions in Sydney’s Chinese community and internal concerns about the role of Beijing’s Australian Council for the Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China, previously run by former political donor Huang Xiangmo.

*Liberal Party member Benjamin Jiang, the husband of Sydney Liberal councillor Nancy Liu, had organised Saturday’s dinner at Sydney Town Hall in support of Mr Morrison’s pet cause — the drought — and was charging between $1700 and $2400 per table, and $988 per seat at the VIP table.

*Ms Liu, a Georges River councillor, recently showed the Prime Minister around Hurstville when Mr Morrison delivered a speech talking up Australia’s relationship with China.

But Mr Morrison said he was never attending the event despite being acquainted with its organisers. “The Prime Minister is not attending this event and was never attending this event,” a spokesman for Mr Morrison said.

A NSW Liberal Party spokesman said: “It’s not a Liberal Party fundraiser, it’s not a Liberal Party event.”

Mr Jiang had been advertising the event with Mr Morrison and Immigration Minister David Coleman as the special guests and said he found out only two weeks ago that the Prime Minister was not attending. Mr Coleman, an ally of Mr Morrison, will attend the event.

“We have been waiting (to hear) from his office until two weeks ago,” Mr Jiang told The Australian. “Our Wechat message you mentioned was released a few months ago. We are selling the seats or table is not because of any particular politician, it is for a group of people who the public respect. The VIPs are not only Liberal politicians, we also include Labor politicians.”

Stanley Xie, an independent candidate Ms Liu beat in last year’s election, said he was concerned about the transparency around how the funds would be used. But Mr Jiang said the event would raise funds for the Dilly Drought Drive.

“We already raised $20,000 in the past few months. At the dinner, we hope to raise some more. We have invited ACCF’s representatives and two local farmers from Wollondilly Shire Council, Mr Gavin Moore and Ms Tia Veech, who are getting the support from the funds to our dinner function to share their stories with us and enhance the awareness of the drought they are experiencing,” he said.

*Ms Liu has previously been listed as a member of Chinese government body the Australian Council for the Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China, while Mr Jiang is listed as being on the seventh-term executive committee of the ACPPRC.

The Sydney-based council is associated with the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification and was formerly headed up by Mr Huang, whose association with Sam Dastyari led to the former senator’s resignation.

Leaked messages show Mr Jiang also attended and advertised paid spots at a Liberal Party fundraiser for NSW North Shore MP Felicity Wilson at a private residence in Neutral Bay on September 13 where Premier Gladys Berejiklian was the guest of honour.
